Growing up in the global economy has been complicated, sometimes I feel like I don’t know who to listen to. The older generation tells me about their shopping trips to Italy and France, how to choose genuine leathers in the tourist traps and where to find the real deal. Now of course these methods still work today but I’m finding it almost impossible to buy Prada or DG for example and find a nice big Made in Italy tag on them, instead I see Made in Vietnam or China. I have to think what in the heck is this now??
High fashion brands do still make make their products in Italy or France but its become so rare that the new generation does not even expect it. If you ask me I don’t like it at all, I find it greedy and sneaky. If I’m going to spend $300 on a pair of shoes then they better be handmade in Italy; why should you pay someone in Asia $5 to make this shoe, add $20 in materials and charge me $300? That’s not at all fair. So now comes the question, are these new models made outside of Italy as good as before? Well put simply no, of course not. But you may ask, are they as cheap as the typical Asian products we buy, are they the same as knock off, how good are they in general?
Well quality is hard to answer and even harder to determine but in short when you buy a pair of authentic high end shoes, no matter where they are made you are indeed buying a better quality product than a cheaper brand and certainly much better than a cheap knock off. The main reason for this is careful planning and quality control. Yes its true these brands have become greedy and have drastically decreased their running costs by moving manufacturing away from Europe but that does not mean that they left factories overseas just run the way they want.
High end brands are very careful with the design, materials and overview of all of their models. The shoes may be made in China nowadays but you can guarantee there is an Italian craftsman standing at the end of the production line making sure that each shoe is exactly as it should be. To add, each shoe is still made from natural high quality leather and from high thread count imported fabrics.
How does this compare to replica items? Simply put, replicas don’t have any of the above-mentioned traits. There is no quality control, the right materials are not used, research is not invested in and you are going to end up with a poorly made product. The origin of your product is not as important as it used to be. We used to trust the Italian tag on the shoes because we know that great effort was put in to making this product right, not necessarily that it came from Italy. Today we put our faith in the label and the reason we do that is because we know where that label came from and the tradition of quality that it represents. Yes these labels are now made elsewhere but the same commitment to quality is applied.
